While the waiter ran for seltzer, Joaquin swiped at his suit with a napkin. "Sometimes I feel like I’m in an observation tank," he said, "some unseen power throwing stuff at me and watching me react."

Stacy stiffened. "Baby, that sounds paranoid."

"Biggest presentation of my career this afternoon, and my alarm breaks, my throat’s sore, you order red wine at lunch." He sighed. "Really, it doesn’t matter. I just need to be on time."

"Good attitude." Stacy thumbed the transceiver secreted in her purse. Her spaghetti marinara was now on hold.

But Joaquin’s busted radiator? Still good to go.
